WHY 42? |

Zappos’d!

June 7th, 2010 by Gary Peare

I recently read Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh's piece in Inc. explaining why he eventually caved in and sold out to Amazon.com.

He and Jeff Bezos originally discussed a sale back in 2005, but Hsieh was worried that they'd lose the customer service-centric company culture he worked so hard to create. Four years later, Hsieh changes his mind, Bezos having convinced him that Amazon and Zappos shared common customer service goals, and the deal went through.

Anyway, Hsieh just published a book about his Zappos tenure and I thought I'd check it out on Amazon.

Oops. I guess this doesn't look too good...

The Apple Way of Naming

June 7th, 2010 by Gary Peare

And also the expensive way.

At Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, Steve Jobs announced that they've changed the name of the iPhone operating system to iOS. Our pals over at Igor point out that Cisco Systems got there first. Sez Igor:

"If every company operated like this, it would make the job of naming companies much, much easier. And put more lawyers to work, recharging our economy in the process."

UPDATE: Apple has now cleared this with Cisco:

“Cisco has agreed to license the iOS trademark to Apple for use as the name of Apple’s operating system for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.  The license is for use of the trademark only and not for any technology.”

AP Stylebook adds 42 (count them!) rules

AP Stylebook 2010

AP Stylebook 2010

Mashable reports that the Associated Press has released its 2010 Stylebook, the "Journalist's 'Bible'". It includes new rules for social media, including ones we'll be sure to incorporate. Remember, it's "website", not "Web site".

Despite the fact that the Stylebook has added 42 new rules, we'll resist calling them the AP42.
